Big Heart, Small Head

As I sit on airplane flying to visit my parents for the weekend, I look out my small window and my perspective is refreshed. If you have ever flown on a plane, you know what I’m talking about. As you take off you see the ground and the view is not much different from being in a skyscraper, but as the plane rises and elevates to higher and higher altitudes you start to realize how small you are in comparison to everything. When you look at the world from 10,000+ feet above ground, everything changes.

Having flown multiple times internationally and domestically, you would think that I would be used to the view and numb to the awe and wonder of the great height but I’m not. Every time I fly, I grow more and more in amazement of not just the view but of the God who created it. When you look at a map, pictures, or even stand next to a skyscraper, you don’t realize how small you really are. Yet even though we are small, even though we are just one out of seven billion people, God still cares about us. How amazing is that!

“God doesn’t count us; he calls us by name. Arithmetic is not his focus.” -Romans 9:28 MSG

The world is so huge that it is impossible to see everything at once, it’s impossible to see the details of this world without being close, yet God sees every detail. When you look at the world from the window of an airplane, you realize how your problems aren’t that big, you aren’t as big and tough as you think, and you definitely aren’t the center of the universe. You can’t even see a person from 5,000 feet let alone 10,000 feet! So why are we so full of ourselves? Why do we put ourselves first? Why are we so selfish? I know I’m sometimes guilty of these things.

When looking at the world from a 10,000 foot perspective, I thought about how we are so selfish we aren’t capable of helping others and making a huge impact because we aren’t willing to work together. If we stopped putting ourselves first and started to put others above ourselves, how much more could we accomplish? If we want to make a large impact, then we have to be willing to put others first and serve them. Don’t have a big head (aka ego), but have a big heart and a small head.

“Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.” -Philippians 2:3 NLT
